Nasal congestion is another term used for a stuffy nose. It results from a combination of anatomic factors and nasal inflammation due to environmental allergies or irritants. It can also lead to sinusitis, which is inflammation of the sinus cavities, and can cause chronic symptoms such as facial pressure/pain, poor sense of smell, runny nose and post nasal drip. At Indigo ENT, we have specialists who can accurately diagnose and manage this common problem and improve your quality of life.

Some lung conditions, asthma in particular, can cause chronic cough and would be best evaluated by your family physician. There are, however, a number of causes of chronic cough and throat irritation that Indigo ENT physician can help you with. Acid reflux can occasionally reach the throat and cause it to be irritated as can secretions dripping down your throat from the back of your nose. The chronic cough caused by these common issues can be associated with intermittent voice hoarseness, throat clearing and feeling like there is something stuck in your throat (globus). Our physicians will be happy to examine you and offer the best treatment for your symptoms depending on their cause.

Tonsillitis, or infection of the tonsils, can be caused by viruses or bacteria and can affect people of all ages. Sometimes infections of the tonsils can be particularly severe or recurrent, requiring treatment that goes above and beyond the need for antibiotics. We have three major salivary glands which are the submandibular, sublingual and parotid glands. These can occasionally become infected, blocked or swell which can be painful and occasionally cause dry mouth. Causes are numerous but most commonly include bacterial/viral infection, stone or sludge blockage of the salivary ducts. Rare disorders such as Sjogren’s syndrome can cause dry mouth, dry eyes and gland swelling. This can be diagnosed with a careful history, bloodwork and a minor salivary gland biopsy.  Consult with your physician if you are having these symptoms and we would be happy to assess.
